Humane Society's National Conference Announced

Critter News

It looks like they have some great workshops with people like Gene Bauer from Farm Sanctuary and Nicole Pollata from the Animal Legal Defense Fund (ALDF.). I recently received this email announcement. The conference is to be held from July 23-26 in Washington, DC. Someday, I hope to attend one of these conferences.

2010 Declared the Year of the Tiger. So What?

Critter News

The Kathmandu Global Tiger Workshop declared 2010 to be the Year of the Tiger. The intention is to focus on saving the tiger species which is being decimated. I say so what? It's just lip service. When China won't support a ban on tiger farms, nor will it work to curb the ridiculous demand for tiger products in its own country, what's the point? China is the single biggest threat to the tiger and it won't participate seriously in its protection. So what if the tiger gets its own year?

The Centre funds high-quality 3Rs research, organises workshops and symposia to disseminate and advance the 3Rs, and develops 3Rs information resources and guidelines. We'll see. On the Psychological Continuum

Animal Person

And when I spoke about a continuum over a year ago as a result of a workshop with Rae Sikora, who demonstrated that there was a continuum, there was some discontent. There is no philosophical continuum, but there is a psychological continuum, as evidenced by everyone at the workshop taking steps back or forward, denoting their increase in animal use (including no meat to meat, or backsliding, like I did a decade ago), or their decrease (such as when vegetarians go vegan).

Bird News Roundup: Birds of a feather … well, you know the rest

10,000 Birds

And just because we all need a good giggle now and then (me, especially, these days), and who better to provide it than the folks at Sesame Workshop, this happened. If a blustery, snowy afternoon isn’t custom-made for catching up on bird news, then I don’t know what is. After all, it’s not like I’m going to see anything other than the White-throated Sparrows and Northern Cardinals flitting about the brush pile outside my window.

The year was 2013 and despite all that sun, I have spent days in a darkened Museu Blau (blue only on the facade, but black inside, almost gothic) with a rather interesting natural history collection (the most interesting question was – how many of those specimens have I seen in the wild, alive and kicking) on a pan-European bird atlassing workshop hosted by the Catalan Ornithological Institute.

On the other hand, if I were to engage in actually drawing and painting birds, I think I would have to start with an actual in-person workshop, not even on bird art specifically, but an introductory course, just to get me familiar with the basics. Then again, I would not dream of attempting creating a block print without taking a workshop. I first encountered Molly Hashimoto’s bird art in California.

American White Pelicans in Key West

I was on a workshop field trip, learning about marine protected areas as my group snorkeled on one of the area’s famous coral reefs. The aquamarine water gave the sky a run for its money, so clear and sparkling beneath a noon-day sun.

Calling All Birders: Come To Hog Island!

10,000 Birds

I was returning from Rockport, Maine, having retrieved my daughter Skye and her friend Bau-Hien from a photography workshop. The first time I saw a puffin, it was a revelation. I’d seen pictures of them, of course – the stocky, flamboyantly-beaked little seabirds who always seem to be wearing expressions of sympathetic concern – but I’d never seen one “in bird” (the avian equivalent of “in person”).

10,000 Birds

I give a lot of workshops all over the country. When I give workshops, I almost always have someone come up to me and tell me how much they have spent on a spotting scope and camera and that every photo they take is utter crap. One of my most popular requests is for a digiscoping program, using a digital camera (point and shoot, SLR or smartphone) along with a spotting scope. It’s perfect for someone who is a wildlife watcher first and a photographer second.

I was a bit surprised and not overly enthusiastic about the sight – while groups of 10 or more birders are an extreme rarity in Serbia, recently one such group of 30 workshop participants was practicing their counting skills on 8000 geese and 20,000 cranes.). A few winters ago, I went waterfowling in East Anglia. At local Internet forums, my friend Dr B. sounds like some James Bond’s nemesis, doesn’t it?)

One way volunteers help is by participating in a bird banding workshop called Bird Ringing Forever.

The Whistle Blowers

10,000 Birds

Through educational materials and workshops, local Working Groups have been working to raise awareness of and appreciation for the value of local wetlands and their responsible use, while pointing out the consequences of species and wetland loss. The haunting call of the West Indian Whistling Duck has long been a sound synonymous with the ever-shrinking wetlands of the Caribbean. But, as with so many other species, these birds have been left to do their own whistle blowing.
