The Asian Koel is a cuckoo species and thus freed from the obligation to raise its own chicks (though the birds like to refer to themselves as brood parasites, which sounds a bit less obviously selfish). However, unfortunately, this seems to be mainly true for Laced Woodpecker (female) … … and Greater Flameback (female).

Of course, LVNP has a great variety of woodpeckers on their bird list , eight of them known to nest in the area, including the White-headed Woodpecker (Picoides albolarvatus. We will hopefully see the rare Black-backed Woodpecker ( Picoides arcticus ) as well. This is a male with some treats for the youngsters.

This was where I set up my bird feeders, just one at first, then expanding as everyone expressed delight in seeing the Carolina Chickadees, Dark-eyed Juncos, and Downy Woodpeckers. Piney Z Lake is separated by Lake Lafayette by another raised berm – this time with no openings for paddlers. This dirt road was the soybean truck-nightmare; about every 10 minutes we had large double-trailer trucks filled with soybeans drive very fast and raise a huge dust cloud that took another 5 minutes to settle. Much of the land around Tokyo Bay has been reclaimed and the taxi-ways of the airport at Haneda have been raised from the water on stilts.
