Short answer: The woodpecker is most likely not crazy and noshing on the house is not what the woodpecker has in mind. Woodpeckers could be pecking on homes for a variety of reasons, all of which can drive a non birder a bit batty. So, why do woodpeckers peck on human made structures?

Birding Singapore

For once, eBird gives a good description of the Asian Glossy Starling, calling it a “Fierce-looking, large songbird” As are humans, this species is fairly urbanized – it “sometimes enters urban areas to roost, e.g. in Singapore” (HBW). “Odd, me?” But the joke simply does not work then).

Another Bird Surprise for Costa Rica- Buff-collared Nightjar!

We might have limited space but we make up for it with a massive amount of biodiversity including well over 900 bird species on the official Costa Rica bird list. The sightings raise several questions. A bit larger than the Netherlands but with less land than Latvia and Ireland, in terms of territory, we rank 126.

Participating in My First “Normal” Birdathon

A life bird for me, and another species for my Audubon Florida Birdathon checklist. Birdathons are typically used by state programs and chapters to raise critical funding for conservation and research programs. Joseph Peninsula State Park, I added terns and shorebirds, ending the day with 50 species in total. An Orchard Oriole!

Rancho Naturalista Lodge, Costa Rica, or in the Land of Coffee and Chocolate

Next stops offered White-crowned Parrot and Barred Parakeets , Chestnut-sided and Canada Warblers , Collared Aracari , half a dozen Purple-throated Fruitcrows … I heard a strong double-nock of a huge Pale-billed Woodpecker , but the bird didn’t present itself to our eyes. Next goal: 1100 species, to cover about 10% of the total.
