This past week in birding news was nothing if not exciting. Almost 16,000 birders, participating in the second annual Global Big Day on May 14th, ticked some 6,284 species worldwide. For now, though, score one in the positive side of the ledger as a long-lost species—the Blue-eyed Ground Dove —has been rediscovered in Brazil.

I just read on the news that about 20 Andean Condors (Vultur gryphus) were poisoned in Chile. The species is being re-introduced in Colombia and Ecuador where the condors are either locally extinct or persist in very low numbers. Other birds were seen crash landing. Another sick condor and two dead ones were found nearby.

Still, I did manage to see a decent 65 species in 6 hours, and many of them stayed quite close to me, allowing for some nice photos. The lovely Rufous-capped Warbler is something of a flagship species for this site. In this photo, the star attraction was the lovely new red foliage of a Cedrela tree. Note that shrike-like bill.
