Birding in Costa Rica, August, 2022- News and Recommendations

Even so, we do have some sandpipers and plovers around; there have been recent reports of Surfbirds and various other wading species. The biggest birding news for Costa Rica was a sighting of an adult Harpy Eagle in northern Costa Rica , near Boca Tapada. Go birding in Costa Rica in August and you will find shorebirds. Harpy Eagle!

Of course, unless you live on Venus, we all know that this year is far from normal and so is the birding news. With around 400 species recorded for the area, yeah, it’s where we might all like to quarantine for a bit!

Good News for South Georgia Island’s Pipit Population

A bird species battling an onslaught of invasive rats just got a glimpse of hope. While this is happy news for any parents, and wonderful news for any threatened species (these Pipits live only on Antarctica’s South Georgia Island and number only 3,000-4,000 pairs), it’s tremendous news for those trying to eradicate rats from the island.

Birding News from Costa Rica at the Start of the Pandemic

Flashback two weeks and my daily check of recent eBird sightings reveals the presence of several tours taking place, lots of cool birds being seen and enjoyed by dozens of birders, no doubt many of the species are lifers, dozens of bird species seen during trips of a lifetime. As I write this, the weather is ironically gorgeous.

The next thing is starting the computer to check the news. And the first news web site is… eBird. Even if you know nothing of this species, you can tell the eaglets from their parents: youngsters have black hair, while their parents are all grey by now. And the “regular” news sites? Oh, who cares!
