Some Birding News about Birders in Costa Rica

10,000 Birds

In Costa Rica, our July birding news usually consists of interesting sightings during the mid-summer tours. Of course, unless you live on Venus, we all know that this year is far from normal and so is the birding news. The post Some Birding News about Birders in Costa Rica appeared first on 10,000 Birds. Which tours saw the most roosting owls? Did Cope have another site for nesting Great Potoo ? This odd nocturnal creature is around the same size as a Barred Owl.

Checking the news

10,000 Birds

The next thing is starting the computer to check the news. And the first news web site is… eBird. And the “regular” news sites? I start my day with a coffee, a strong Turkish coffee without sugar – it is the stuff that makes the chest hair grow, as one UK friend of mine has put it. I go to the Hotspots page to click on the Past week only, to see which reachable Belgrade sites – especially my favourite patches – were recently visited and which birds were spotted there.

Lame News Story!

Critter News

So, I click on this story because the link says no pets were lost on the US Airways flight that went down in the Hudson. Great, right? Makes it sound like they were rescued right? Well, no pets were lost because there were no pets on the flight in the first place. The miracle US Airways flight that went into the Hudson River has another feel-good story: The airline says no pets were lost on the flight.

Good News for the Alamagordo Chimps!

Critter News

I received an alert from the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine. The Alamagordo chimps will be allowed to remain in New Mexico for about two years while the NIH studies the issue of their transference. This gives animal rights activists some time to prepare further defense of the animals. Good way to end 2010. Here's the story as reported in NewsWest. ALAMOGORDO, N.M. (AP) AP) - Some 186 chimpanzees will remain at a federal facility in New Mexico for now.

Good News for Greyhounds

Animal Person

Here are a couple recent bits of good news. We who want humans to stop using sentient nonhumans have few victories to celebrate. But one area that continues to provide them is the fight against the use of greyhounds as a source of entertainment (and gambling revenue) by forcing them to race. You may recall that Massachusetts voters let their opinions about dog racing be heard when they voted to ban racing in their state.

A Post Chock-full of Bird News

10,000 Birds

… because my husband and I have done some migrating of our own, from Chicago to Philadelphia, over the past few weeks, and bringing 10,000 Birds readers the freshest and best bird news sadly had to take a back seat to packing, driving, unpacking, and furiously scouring Craigslist for Ikea furniture. So without further ado, here’s what’s been going on the past few weeks in bird news.

Looks like blue whales may be coming back to Alaska. Here's hoping Sarah Palin leaves them alone. From the Associated Press: Blue whales are returning to Alaska in search of food and could be re-establishing an old migration route several decades after they were nearly wiped out by commercial whalers, scientists say.

Any News is Good News?

The winner of this year’s Bulwer-Lytton Fiction Contest for worst opening sentence to an imaginary novel is about birds and windmills. Sure, it is not a scientific treatise, but anything that brings attention to this issue is good, right? CBS News Runs Series on Factory Farms

Critter News

This occurred a week or so ago. Katie Couric did a story on the use of antibiotics on factory farms in the US and the potential harm to humans. Unfortunately, I missed this series as we don't watch network television. A friend of mine said it was quite good. According to her, there was a message that removing the use of antibiotics would actually improve these poor animals' welfare. Here is an article about the series.

Good news for the Wood Stork

10,000 Birds

I was happy to read that the wood stork ( Mycteria Americana ), a bird near and dear to me, was down-sited from the status of endangered to threatened species. On June 25, Secretary of the Interior Sally Jewell announced that the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is down-listing the wood stork from endangered to threatened under the Endangered Species Act (ESA). The wood stork was listed as endangered in 1984, because the Florida population was dropping at an approximate rate of 5 percent per year.
