The biggest birding news for Costa Rica was a sighting of an adult Harpy Eagle in northern Costa Rica , near Boca Tapada. Their local guide excitedly confirmed the bird as a Harpy Eagle (only the most dearly wanted species for every birder in Costa Rica), took photos and video, and spread the news. Harpy Eagle!

Prothonotary Warblers (like the dapper bird above captured for posterity by Corey) should carry frequent-flier cards—a recent Audubon-led study found that one geolocator-toting individual racked up more than 5,000 miles in eight months.

Reuters dutifully puts it on their website , which then gets picked up on my Google news page. The United Egg Producers issues a press release claiming that egg prices will rise 25% if animal welfare advocates get their way. All according to a study by some agribusiness related consulting firm.

While the ultralight aircraft leading a flock of young Whooping Cranes to Florida may again take to the skies , that good news is tempered by the effects of the drought in Texas , which has already led to the death of at least one Whooping Crane there. It’s a mixed bag for our most charismatic of North American waders this week.

But one area that continues to provide them is the fight against the use of greyhounds as a source of entertainment (and gambling revenue) by forcing them to race. You may recall that Massachusetts voters let their opinions about dog racing be heard when they voted to ban racing in their state.

I just read on the news that about 20 Andean Condors (Vultur gryphus) were poisoned in Chile. The birds were observed crashing into the rocks high in the Andean mountains near a hydroelectric power plant. Other birds were seen crash landing. Another sick condor and two dead ones were found nearby.

This one's more like Good News for Mary Martin. I received a call yesterday from a woman who started a coalition for homeless cats. She said her Trapper Man could go to the Project Treadstone site--last night and this morning--and trap up to 10 cats that she would bring to Pahokee.

(In the U.S., at least—international markets, you’ll have to wait a bit longer.)

So, I click on this story because the link says no pets were lost on the US Airways flight that went down in the Hudson. Great, right? Makes it sound like they were rescued right? Well, no pets were lost because there were no pets on the flight in the first place.

New York City killed less Canada Geese this year than any year since they started rounding the geese up and slaughtering them. The cullings have happened every year since the 2009 emergency landing of a US Airways plane in the Hudson River after the plane struck geese and was disabled.

The Alamagordo chimps will be allowed to remain in New Mexico for about two years while the NIH studies the issue of their transference. I received an alert from the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine. This gives animal rights activists some time to prepare further defense of the animals. Good way to end 2010.
