Lame News Story!

Critter News

So, I click on this story because the link says no pets were lost on the US Airways flight that went down in the Hudson. Great, right? Makes it sound like they were rescued right? Well, no pets were lost because there were no pets on the flight in the first place. The miracle US Airways flight that went into the Hudson River has another feel-good story: The airline says no pets were lost on the flight.

Good News for the Alamagordo Chimps!

Critter News

I received an alert from the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine. The Alamagordo chimps will be allowed to remain in New Mexico for about two years while the NIH studies the issue of their transference. This gives animal rights activists some time to prepare further defense of the animals. Good way to end 2010. Here's the story as reported in NewsWest. ALAMOGORDO, N.M. (AP) AP) - Some 186 chimpanzees will remain at a federal facility in New Mexico for now.

Good News for Greyhounds

Animal Person

Here are a couple recent bits of good news. We who want humans to stop using sentient nonhumans have few victories to celebrate. But one area that continues to provide them is the fight against the use of greyhounds as a source of entertainment (and gambling revenue) by forcing them to race. You may recall that Massachusetts voters let their opinions about dog racing be heard when they voted to ban racing in their state.

Good News About Blue Whales

Critter News

Looks like blue whales may be coming back to Alaska. Here's hoping Sarah Palin leaves them alone. From the Associated Press: Blue whales are returning to Alaska in search of food and could be re-establishing an old migration route several decades after they were nearly wiped out by commercial whalers, scientists say.

Yet More Good News for Project Treadstone

Animal Person

This one's more like Good News for Mary Martin. I received a call yesterday from a woman who started a coalition for homeless cats. She said her Trapper Man could go to the Project Treadstone site--last night and this morning--and trap up to 10 cats that she would bring to Pahokee. Pahokee will keep them overnight after their surgeries, then they will be returned to their colony.

Creature Talk

This video nicely highlights the insanity in killing “racing&# horses when they become injured. I think my favorite parts are when Shawn’s mother says “it’s just so expensive to keep a lame gymnast&# ; and then when the host asks her if Shawn was in a lot of pain at the end, and she replies, “oh no, no, no – there was no pain – just a quick shot to the back of the head.&#.
