In 2023 I attempted to keep a year list of mammal encounters: the list barely exceeded 20 species, while it became complicated by seeing bats and voles that I was unable to name specifically.

Although relatively common here they’re notoriously difficult to see well – a phenomenon clearly not unique to this species ! A Lineated Woodpecker banged its head against a dry branch. Golden-crowned Warbler is one of the three resident warbler species on Trinidad. I was thrilled to see a Short-tailed Hawk fly in.

Some animals are injured and killed by wildfires. A fire might kill weak birds or, depending on the time of year, claim nestlings. Each of the six species in Costa Rica sports beautiful plumage with green and blue hues highlighted with rufous tones, and several also have long, racket-tipped tails. We did get introduced to Geiner Huertas Reyes, who took us for a walk along part of the river and into a public park, where we put together a nice list of 61 species. This Black-cheeked Woodpecker was shot right off the upper patio off our room. Another species in the long name category, would be this Common Chlorospingus.

I had no luck with the rails or bitterns but I did manage to see quite a few species, including some that were very cooperative. While I was disappointed by the lack of rails and bitterns I was pleased to see several species of ducks, lots of early migrant passerines, and a couple of other cool species.

In the last few months, Downy Woodpecker s and squirrels have added some holes to the cedar siding of the building. Both are non-native species in Minnesota and drive out native flickers, bluebirds and other cavity nesters to take over to raise their own young. The sparrows will go as far to kill the original makers of the cavity.

Lucky and his instructor were successful in bluffing this particular bear, yet the very next year in the same area, Hoshino was killed by a Brown Bear. Three Chestnut Bulbuls seem to winter on Tianmashan this year – somewhat surprising given that the HBW calls the species a year-round resident in an area at least several hundred kilometers south of Shanghai. The Rufous-tailed Robin seen at Tianmashan is another species that one would not necessarily expect here in January.
