Acorn Woodpeckers Drinking Sugar Water?

10,000 Birds

You probably know that I live where we have many, many woodpeckers. One of the most abundant woodpeckers in Oak Run , where I live, is the Acorn Woodpecker ( Melanerpes formicivorus ). During all these years I have never had woodpeckers of any species feeding at my hummingbird feeders, so I found this very odd.

Solid Air: Invisible Killer Saving Billions of Birds From Windows–A Book Review

10,000 Birds

This was where I set up my bird feeders, just one at first, then expanding as everyone expressed delight in seeing the Carolina Chickadees, Dark-eyed Juncos, and Downy Woodpeckers. I picked up a Downy Woodpecker, an every-day visitor. I was shocked when I found the first body, a female Towhee. The window silhouettes were gone.

Birding Sukau, Sabah, Borneo

10,000 Birds

10,000 Birds

Some animals are injured and killed by wildfires. A fire might kill weak birds or, depending on the time of year, claim nestlings. Forest Service research biologist Vicki Saab studies, birds evolved alongside fire and flee in the face of conflagrations. So what do these facts mean for our wildlife?

I Remember Elephants

10,000 Birds

Late last month, while searching for bears , woodpeckers and spirits of Greece, I deliberately avoided checking any news, especially from my home country. We are facing a plague of poaching that is again decimating the species. In Africa, one elephant is being killed every 15 minutes. One may say so. Perhaps 15 minutes?
