Acorn Woodpeckers Drinking Sugar Water?

You probably know that I live where we have many, many woodpeckers. One of the most abundant woodpeckers in Oak Run , where I live, is the Acorn Woodpecker ( Melanerpes formicivorus ). During all these years I have never had woodpeckers of any species feeding at my hummingbird feeders, so I found this very odd.

This was where I set up my bird feeders, just one at first, then expanding as everyone expressed delight in seeing the Carolina Chickadees, Dark-eyed Juncos, and Downy Woodpeckers. I picked up a Downy Woodpecker, an every-day visitor. I was shocked when I found the first body, a female Towhee. The window silhouettes were gone.

The resident fashion critic of eBird is not very impressed with the Orange-backed Woodpecker , stating that it is “dressed all in patchwork” It has one of the more stupid-sounding genus names – Reinwardtipicus, which is made up of the name of Dutch naturalist Prof. Lucky him, right? Though he ended up dead anyway.

It seems that this is another species for which the standard phrase of scientists anywhere, “more research needed”, applies. Assuming that the (North American) Imperial Woodpecker and the Ivory-billed Woodpecker are both extinct, the Great Slaty Woodpecker is the largest woodpecker species alive.

Anyway, it is a very cute little woodpecker that eBird calls “unique, tiny” Its drum sound can be surprisingly loud for a bird this size. For example, this paper points out that migrating Bramblings prefer to feed in a habitat in which they are less likely to get killed. As I frequently mention, science is quite wonderful.
