I saw two Pitta species at Hongbenghe, both among the slightly less glamourous among the pitta family: The Blue-naped Pitta … … and the closely related Rusty-naped Pitta. It seems that this is another species for which the standard phrase of scientists anywhere, “more research needed”, applies.

Kills in Canada, Alaska and Mexico are not included in the count. Hunting sandhill cranes in Kentucky is a bad idea from a public relations standpoint, considering the growing cadre of birders and nature enthusiasts for whom cranes are a touchstone species. Nationwide, wildlife watchers now outspend hunters 6 to 1.

So, one might surmise, it’s OK if they get shot by hunters thinking they’re sandhill cranes? What could motivate gunmen (I cannot call them hunters) in two states to deliberately kill North America’s tallest and most critically endangered bird? It may be as sick as deliberately targeting an endangered species for death.

The migrants face many perils, hunters, predators, adverse weather conditions and lack of refueling opportunities due to habitat loss. And of course you’ll be keen to keep an eye open for Mantell’s Moa , one of ten species you should see on your tour.
