Swifts are aplenty, one is likely to see Gray-rumped , Band-rumped , or Short-tailed Swift hunting insects each morning. Stands of large trees attract the largest woodpecker in T&T: Crimson-crested Woodpecker. Yes, Red-bellied Macaws not only mate on the property, but nest here too!

I viewed them at dusk, through a telescope, from a ridge overlooking the area they were hunting. At the time we were looking, without success, for White-backed Woodpeckers. I’ve yet to see an English pine marten, but I once watched one hunting red squirrels in the Bialowieza Forest in Poland.

Lesser Whistling Ducks are “not threatened by hunting as they are not considered good to eat” ( Wikipedia ). However, unfortunately, this seems to be mainly true for Laced Woodpecker (female) … … and Greater Flameback (female). Seeing a Rufous Woodpecker for the first time, I thought it looked kind of weird.

As the Red-Shouldered Hawk seen above screamed overhead, Acorn Woodpeckers not only treated themselves to the woodpecker feeder, they had to attack the sunflower feeders as well. As I walked out on my back porch on Friday morning, the first day of the count, it was a cool, clear day and the birds were very active at the feeders.

One would think that for a species as common in Europe as the Grey-headed Woodpecker , the HBW would spend some effort to update the species entry.

A pair of Yellow Warblers hunted insects in the canopy, and a Northern Waterthrush did the same just over the surface of the water. Skirting around the international airport to the mangroves on its eastern end, we picked up Brown-crested Flycatcher and even more Barred Antshrikes. A Spectacled Thrush foraged among the leaf litter.

I had never seen this species of kite before, but Guhin explained that they often hunted in the natural acres of the reserve. Acorn Woodpeckers squeaked to each other as they moved up and down bare tree trunks, and a soft owl hoot echoed from the distance. Guhin knew without binoculars, “ White-tailed Kite ,” she identified.

There is a breeding pair of White-tailed Eagles at the Veliko Ratno Island and they can be seen year-round, but the best chances are in winter, when they hunt ducks around the island. In March and November, Common Cranes are a possibility. Tactics: Aim for early mornings and from the end of April, carry an insect repellent for mosquitoes.
