This year it was an American Crow ( Corvus brachyrhyncus ), though at home in Albany, New York, it’s just as likely to be – and has been in the past – a Fish Crow ( Corvus ossifragus ). All winter long, large mixed flocks of crows stream over my home on their way from their downtown roosts out to feed in the farm fields outside of the city.

Still, this way or another, the year is ending with some glorious species, e.g. a rare Greater Spotted Eagle. Now, one species, that I should find. 2018 is about to end. The Slavonian Grebe is also a lifer for me.

Usually, maize is on the menu, only occasionally carrion or dead trout from a nearby fish farm. There are more than 1100 plant species, the most valuable being the 76 endemics. Other species include Roe Deer (also spotted), Wildcat , European Pine Marten and Otter.

The house is on a working farm, in the far back end of a large mountain valley and tremendous. We did get introduced to Geiner Huertas Reyes, who took us for a walk along part of the river and into a public park, where we put together a nice list of 61 species. Costa Rica certainly has a few birds with some amazingly long names.

Other species have certainly expanded their ranges, but never in such a rapid and global scale. For reasons that are not quite clear, this species underwent a massive range expansion. In the east, this species can be found along the east coast of Africa, the Nile Valley,and into parts of the middle east and India and southeast Asia.

While there were way less Puffins than any of the other species, they are still so much fun to see. Red Kites were considerted a Threatened Species starting in the early ‘80s, and a nation wide program was started to re-introduce them around the UK. The Bellymac Farm turned out to be the location that the birds choose to gather in.

Technically, it is a part of the Baranda fish farm, but being a complex of nowadays brackish oxbow lakes, they are not used for carp production and the access is not restricted.

The road was lined with scrub and short trees, and I spotted not one but two new sparrow species. They perched atop electric poles, on fences, and even on roofs of nearby farm buildings (Point Reyes allows cattle farming), and I soon lost count of how many large raptors we had seen. The Veliko Ratno Island birdlist is about 170 species long, of which more than 90 were observed from the Dorcol Promenade. Not many birds, two Ruddy Turnstones , one Willet , a fishing boat in front of the beach with a small flock of Brown Pelicans surrounding it, several Magnificent Frigatebirds above it… and several smaller flocks of noisy Scarlet Macaws above us. Beside macaws, Carara eBird hotspot has a bird list of 424 species.

In the end, I truly did set out to reduce the number of birds that I feature here from 1302, my years total species, down to 10-12. In southern Scotland, neat Gretna Green, we saw first hand, the successful re-introduction of the Red Kite into the rural farm areas. My favorite of the stay was this White-cheeked Bulbul.

Another big change in twenty two years is the presence of distant wind farms in the North Sea as in the above photo. They have been recording bird species numbers and banding/ringing birds for many years with the initial roll call of bird species starting in 1938. The one bird I did not see here, however, was the Bateleur Eagle … One highlight in the area is the Saddle-billed Stork , likely to be the tallest species in the stork family.
