Summer Birding at Conboy Lake NWR

According to eBird , just over 200 species have been observed at the refuge and just under 1,000 checklists have been submitted. The namesake “lake” generally only exists when there is enough runoff during the spring, as the area was extensively modified for farming years ago.

The Rusty Squirrel-Hawk AKA Ferruginous Hawk

Week 21: Our last week in Scotland

While there were way less Puffins than any of the other species, they are still so much fun to see. Red Kites were considerted a Threatened Species starting in the early ‘80s, and a nation wide program was started to re-introduce them around the UK. The Bellymac Farm turned out to be the location that the birds choose to gather in.

Miracle upon miracle, I actually ran into my college friend at the visitor center, and now that that logistical snafu was taken care of I could actually focus on where I was and, even better, what wildlife we could see. The road was lined with scrub and short trees, and I spotted not one but two new sparrow species.

Your Best Birds of the Year for 2012

To finally connect with the species and to do so in such subtle light and with two very confiding individuals makes them my Best Bird of the Year! It was a mythical bird I didn’t ever expect to see.
