It is barely visible, but on it there seems to be an endangered Saker Falcon. We were searching for the territories of Saker Falcons. Okay, but falcons do not nest in the grass? Still, we are a bit disappointed: those are not Sakers, but Common Kestrels – the only truly common falcon species of Serbia. March 2007.

Wisconsin Falconer Legally Traps Snowy Owl

But a falconer did legally trap a snowy, I saw the picture on his Facebook page before he deleted it after a firestorm of controversy exploded. Snowy Owls are used in falconry, more so in Europe but they are legal for a few states here in the US. I haven’t always had such a high opinion of falconers.

Horrible Hybrids

As soon as I looked at it more closely it was quite clear that it wasn’t a scaup of any species, despite its resemblance to a North American Lesser Scaup. I hadn’t considered the possible parentage more than the two probable species involved, but intriguingly a Pochard drake x Tufted duck looks quite different.
