Whenever I come here, I am focused on birds, but I have had some good mammal sighting as well: a roe deer swimming across a pond (only its head and antlers visible), a pair of otters playing in the water, a curious (young?) It is a spacious floodplain between the River Danube and the levee, 2.1 mi at its widest point and some 9 km2 / 3.5 It all started well three decades ago, when I intensively birded the Danube Backwaters by kayak. As a teenager in Yugoslavia, I used to buy National Geographic in second-hand bookshops.

Finally, of the at least 20 species of mammals present here, the otter, the jackal, and the wildcat certainly deserve a mention. Lunch at the tavern brought a European Serin , and the drive back added a Little Owl on a sign post by the road, and a few soaring birds: White Stork , Great White Pelican and a Short-toed Eagle.

In those few days in the park, I observed about 35 birds, including European Honey Buzzard , Grey-headed Woodpecker and the numerous Mistle Thrushes and Eurasian Bullfinches , and half a dozen mammals, European Pine Marten among them. The Brown Bear remains my nemesis mammal. Yet, not the bear, I’ll have to return for it.

It is built to reach out into the water when the dam is full and is reached along a raised walkway, screened from the mammals, reptiles and birds that may be roosting, resting, feeding, drinking or waiting in ambush close by. The now familiar sound of a pair of African Fish-Eagles dominated the soundscape. Blue-cheeked Bee-eater (above), African Fish-Eagle (below). The avian action was not limited to the water, however. A tame Blue-cheeked Bee-eater posed well for photographs, capitalizing on the booming insect life on the lake. No-one complained.

After the Common Starling , my second bird of the morning becomes the largest eagle of Europe, the White-tailed Eagle , this one with a fairly white tail, yet still dark beak, that I estimate to be in its 3rd calendar year. The only mammals of the day were feral Nutrias (Coypus), aquatic rodents originally from southern South America released from the bankrupt fur-farms and well established here. Many are familiar with dissecting owl pellets, but several birds will caste a pellet including hawks, eagles, gulls, herons and heck, I once witnessed a Scissor-tailed Flycatcher hack up a small one. There’s a large eagle at the top of an acacia crown, we cannot tell which one, so we wait for it to take flight and show its colours… Finally – a Short-toed Snake Eagle !
