As with mammals, the avifauna of the tar pits is heavy on individuals from predatory and scavenging species who were perhaps drawn to the struggles of dying mammoths and ground sloths. In those few days in the park, I observed about 35 birds, including European Honey Buzzard , Grey-headed Woodpecker and the numerous Mistle Thrushes and Eurasian Bullfinches , and half a dozen mammals, European Pine Marten among them. The Brown Bear remains my nemesis mammal. Yet, not the bear, I’ll have to return for it.

This park protects the largest remaining tract of dry deciduous forest in the west of India, offering visitors 37 species of reptiles, 38 species of mammals and, not to be forgotten – almost 300 bird species. The area is one of the most important in Greece for birds, comprising more than 270 species. Finally, of the at least 20 species of mammals present here, the otter, the jackal, and the wildcat certainly deserve a mention. The now familiar sound of a pair of African Fish-Eagles dominated the soundscape. Blue-cheeked Bee-eater (above), African Fish-Eagle (below). It was even pumping its tail, much like the New World species I am accustomed to. The avian action was not limited to the water, however. Common Sandpiper. No-one complained.

The waterfowl flock was made up of two very unique looking species: the Fulvous and Black-belled Whistling Ducks. Encompassing over 30,000 acres, the refuge protects birds of course, but also butterflies, mammals, and more. After noting as many species as possible, I high-tailed it back to the car. Other species I can recognize are colloquially called crocodile bark tree, due to the bark pattern, and paper bark. For you and me, there are about 200 bird species, but for proper tourists, there seem to be only five species in the reserve: Bengal Tiger , Leopard , Sloth Bear , Indian Wild Dog (Dhole) and the Gaur.

After the Common Starling , my second bird of the morning becomes the largest eagle of Europe, the White-tailed Eagle , this one with a fairly white tail, yet still dark beak, that I estimate to be in its 3rd calendar year. Looking miserable with its feathers soaked, one yellow and blue European Bee-eater sits on a dead branch.

The Veliko Ratno Island birdlist is about 170 species long, of which more than 90 were observed from the Dorcol Promenade. Highlight species: Ferruginous Duck , Goosander , Red-breasted Merganser , Red-crested Pochard , Greater Scaup , Velvet Scoter , Black-throated Diver. It is a good place for South African birders, as several species are found here and nowhere else in South Africa, and it holds a small number of endemics that it shares with the Mozambique lowlands. Many are familiar with dissecting owl pellets, but several birds will caste a pellet including hawks, eagles, gulls, herons and heck, I once witnessed a Scissor-tailed Flycatcher hack up a small one. For example, since eagles and hawks tend to rip their prey apart and have stronger digestive acids, their pellets look like wads of fur.

Luckily, I didn’t have to look hard to find the Dusky Eagle-Owl’s nest. The species is crepuscular and nocturnal, but can sometimes be seen during the day. Well, the Dusky Eagle-Owl was big too, but for some reason, the Fish-Owl seemed huge. It was a big owl. Maybe it was the intimidating stare.
