Kerkini in Winter

Last year, in November, I notched up a dozen species of butterflies, an impressive total anywhere in Europe so late in the year. Wintering Wallcreepers are always a possibility, too, generally in quarries where Eagle Owls are resident. A Kerkini mini-tiger Disappointingly, mammal encounters are few, other than the odd Roe Deer.

Birding Gir National Park, India

This park protects the largest remaining tract of dry deciduous forest in the west of India, offering visitors 37 species of reptiles, 38 species of mammals and, not to be forgotten – almost 300 bird species. It belongs to the same species as those in Europe, but a smaller subspecies ( Sus scrofa davidi ).

Whenever I come here, I am focused on birds, but I have had some good mammal sighting as well: a roe deer swimming across a pond (only its head and antlers visible), a pair of otters playing in the water, a curious (young?)
