One bird species that we occasionally observe around Broome is the Yellow-billed Spoonbill, but we had not seen one for a few years until recently. We soon observed several bird species and then a Yellow-billed Spoonbill flew overhead. Not only is it a bird species we rarely encounter, but we had never found a breeding colony before.

Perhaps the fact that we really enjoy talking to each other had a slight negative impact on the number of species seen (“only” 52). Watching this rhythmic group behavior was actually quite hypnotic. Still, a male Archilochus hummer (of either species) is a rare treat here. But it was certainly worth it.

Also, our winter visitor species are starting to arrive. But it turns out a Tufted Flycatcher can be even cuter, with just a little hop: Chestnut-sided Shrike-Vireos are actually true Vireos, but of a group that is physically larger than the Vireos that reach the U.S. and Canada.

(The White-tipped Dove is actually called, in Spanish, the Paloma Arroyera , or “Gully Dove” And sorry, I have yet to get a photo of this shy species. Like most of the species on this list, this tiny highland bird prefers to make its presence know by singing, rather than by being seen.

Being an island, Mauritius has its share of endemics, extinct endemics (the dodo again), and introduced species. I saw a few of each group, with the obvious exception of the second one. The Red Fody is an introduced species, though from nearby, sort of (Madagascar). Of course, the Common Myna is not a native species either.

To the relief of Mexican birders everywhere, this species was split several years later into two species; the black-and-white eastern race is now Morelet’s Seedeater , and the more colorful western race is now the Cinnamon-rumped Seedeater. Apparently, Longcanggou is a great place to see a variety of parrotbill species. I can only partly confirm this, with my sightings restricted to two species.
