They are highly trained homing pigeons, which is why it costs more to hire a company that will deliver this type of bird, and to make sure they are released correctly. Ethical businesses post notices on their websites stating that unless the released birds are properly trained and conditioned, they will not survive.

A Pectoral Sandpiper at dawn is a nice way to start your day. I love Long-billed Curlews. Laughing Gulls ? They’re OK, too. No lack of Stilt Sandpipers and Long-billed Dowitchers here!

Our bus ride to the train that would take us to the boat launch led through monoculture pineapple plantations being sprayed with pesticides that were not a pretty sight, but the view of the sun breaking through the clouds over the mountains (like in the picture above) was inspiring. Not only that, but we had a train ride to look forward to!

Burrowing Owls are notoriously difficult to spot, even for the trained eye, since they are low to the ground and blend in to their background. These were taken right outside the golf course fence and within a hundred feet of a car dealership parking lot. There are actually four birds in this photo.

On the first trip in 2012 we used public transport to get there and the train conveniently gets you to Macarthur Square shopping centre and you can then get a bus that drops you right at the entrance to the park. There are display boards with information around the park and of course it tells you which of the creatures are dangerous to touch!

It also coincided with our 26th anniversary, so we chose to head by train into the Blue Mountains to do some birding for a week and get some exercise on all of the hiking trails. The train service is efficient and picturesque and we used it every day to get around.
