Little Big Year

Of course, a person who doesn’t drive, ping-pongs between two states, and has finals in April and new classes every September is not ideally situated to do any kind of Big Year at all. When I got word of the state first Couch’s Kingbird being seen in the West Village, easily accessible by train, I was up at the Olde Homestead.

Powerful Owl in the Royal Botanical Gardens-Sydney

The Royal Botanical Gardens are a huge area to explore and easily accessed by public transport. This worked in our favour and we were able to take a few more photos before we had to make a move and get ourselves back to the train station. Of course Tom got much better photos than me and you can see some of them here !

Cuero y Salado Wildlife Refuge, Honduras, Part 1

Our bus ride to the train that would take us to the boat launch led through monoculture pineapple plantations being sprayed with pesticides that were not a pretty sight, but the view of the sun breaking through the clouds over the mountains (like in the picture above) was inspiring. Not only that, but we had a train ride to look forward to!

Australian Botanic Garden, Mount Annan

On the first trip in 2012 we used public transport to get there and the train conveniently gets you to Macarthur Square shopping centre and you can then get a bus that drops you right at the entrance to the park. On two of our trips to Sydney we have made a visit to the Australian Botanic Gardens at Mount Annan.

Serendip Sanctuary, Victoria

You can easily get there via public transport by taking the train to Lara from either Geelong or Melbourne if you do not have access to a vehicle. Red-rumped Parrot Purple-crowned Lorikeet There were plenty of New Holland Honeyeaters feeding in the trees, but of course the closest one got to me was on a wire fence!

Wisconsin Falconer Legally Traps Snowy Owl

When you see a falconer transporting their bird or walking with a group, the bird might be in a dark crate or hooded. All the training with the bird is based on positive reinforcement. Of course I can’t speak for every falconer out there. It was eventually read and turns out the bird was a released falconry bird.

Hornsby Blue Gum Walk

On our trip to New South Wales in June we took the opportunity to return to one of the picturesque bush walks that is not too far from the city and easily reached by public transport. The train station at Hornsby is the start of the walk and there are shops nearby if you need supplies before you head off or on your return.
