My new birding buddy, Ignacio Torres, knew of this area because a company had built a large partially-paved access road as part of a plan to build a housing development on a pristine, wooded hill. We saw 50 species in around five hours, which is a solid number for a summer outing. This site is along a small river, named Río Bello.

In Kangding, there is a rather opulent bird hide – two stories, solid construction, spacious, lots of glass, a separate paved parking lot, though mysteriously (and as far as I can tell from my experience of living in China for almost 20 years, not indicative of fundamentally different physical needs of Chinese people) missing a bathroom.

The trees are of one species and nearly devoid of insect life, the only plants are ornamental or lawn, and the amount of cover at ground level is virtually nil. Sometimes they are a very surprising species. It was a fun time even though, as usual, the species count was relatively low. And the noise! Ovenbird in Bryant Park.

There is one other nature reserve further south, the Obedska bara wetland, managed by the state forestry company. When such a company runs a nature reserve, it is a bit like having a fox to watch over your chickens. After that experience, I stopped complaining about their hides, realising that they are as good as they ever will be.

As a consequence, this species is only a rare vagrant in Serbia. Furthermore, the Slav Grebe was seen at that very spot two hours earlier in the company of the two BNGs – the same scene I observed. But, beside Geoff, they had no previous experience with the species and most were not as critical as I was.

After writing this last sentence, I looked up the species in the HBW and found the sentence “Song poorly documented” in the appropriate section, while with regard to calls, the description is that “call is a two-note raspy nasal ‘ryeeh-reh’”. In New Zealand, the Spotted Dove is an introduced species.
