After the Dogs of War was aired on state TV in the late 1980s, a friend of mine, found observing birds nesting on electricity pylons in a breadbasket country north of Belgrade, was taken to the police under suspicion of espionage. In contrast, the Little Egret is mostly quiet, which is a good thing given that it sounds a bit like an asthmatic dog when deciding to be vocal. It looks fairly flashy in its breeding plumage, much less so in winter. It is much more likely to be found in larger flocks, at least outside the breeding season.

In fact, in New York State, other than a small breeding colony west of Rochester, there are very few records of Eurasian Collared-Dove. But the next morning I tried again so, of course, the bird showed itself immediately. When I first spotted the dove it was sitting in a plane tree just north of the dog run in Chelsea Waterfront Park.

This time it was stood amongst the Greater Sand Plovers and one Lesser Sand Plover that still had breeding plumage and several Red-necked Stint. Oriental Plover with Greater Sand Plovers , a Lesser Sand Plover in breeding plumage and Red-necked Stint. At high tide the shorebirds are relaxed and often sitting on the cool, wet sand.
