Horrible Hybrids

On BirdTrack, the British equivalent of e-Bird, the list of birds provided does allow for Tufted Duck x Ferruginous Duck to be recorded, but not Tufted Duck x Pochard. However, that’s exactly what I guessed the duck swimming in front of me had to be. My hunch was Tufted Duck x Pochard.

Contrary to alleged preferences among humans, the golden-headed cisticola has a shorter tail during the breeding season ( source ). It breeds in tree holes, presumably explaining the more commonly used name for it.

Kutras Lake and the California Gull

On top of that, they occur in breeding and non-breeding plumage! The top photo shows a first winter California Gull ( Larus californicus ) on the right and a non-breeding adult on the left. Below is the same first winter California Gull with the smaller non-breeding adult Ring-billed Gull ( Larus delawarensis ) on the left.

These ponds and the larger Cedar Lake and collection pond hold Tufted Duck , Greylag Goose and Eurasian Moorhen. Until the turn of the century, a wildfowl collection and extensive aviaries were kept at the castle. The exotics have now mostly been dispersed to other collections, but a few remain.
