On our recent trip to Sydney we explored several areas that were easily reached by public transport & we discovered that there are some great walk trails that start near train stations. We soon descended into the bush and there were plenty of flowers out and the bush was thick… all the harder for finding birds!

You can easily get there via public transport by taking the train to Lara from either Geelong or Melbourne if you do not have access to a vehicle. Danum Valley is the finest birding location I have ever been to. And places I have seen more birds. But a a package, if I had to rate the best places I’ve ever been birding, the only place I can think that comes close is Mweya, in Uganda, or maybe Tikal, in Guatemala. She is a lifelong champion of all birds, and a hero and inspiration to me. The eagle was so hypothermic I was reluctant to put her in a transport box. Even as a veteran wildlife rehabilitator, I could scarcely believe the sight before me. But in birds they eat living tissue, and once they are internal will kill the patient.

The weather in Karratha was very hot during our visit with daytime temperatures of 38c (100f) and the predominant birds in the township were Little Corella , Crested Pigeons and Silver Gulls. Karratha is a town built on industry and first impressions do not give you particularly high hopes for any good birding areas.

It is very easy to access the Central Catchment Nature Reserve by public transport. Then there are the Wild Boars, Plantain Squirrels, Monitor Lizards and of course the bird-life.
