Birding Tradition: the New Year’s Day List

Starting the New Year by trying to see as many species as possible is something of a birding tradition. My diary notes that the New Year dawned grey and windy, but I rose early, walked six miles before breakfast and noted a modest 26 species of birds. The latter are great bruisers of ducks, built like a small battle ship.

Birding Tengchong, Yunnan (again)

According to his Wikipedia entry, he was a strong but unsuccessful supporter of women attending the university, so he is one of the better people to name a bird species after. As I saw both of them at the same spot in Tengchong, I wonder whether the bird below is a result of a pairing of the two morphs. A bad one, admittedly.

It was an unexpected bird tour, without too much planning and aimed at a few target species, of which we saw most, but the main one eluded us… Early morning, leaving the last houses behind… and a Little Owl awaits us on a traffic sign. Summer Birding at Conboy Lake NWR

I recently drove from my home in Portland to Conboy Lake NWR in southern Washington for a birding day-trip. When I arrived in the morning, there were many birds and no people. The namesake “lake” generally only exists when there is enough runoff during the spring, as the area was extensively modified for farming years ago.
