Still, this way or another, the year is ending with some glorious species, e.g. a rare Greater Spotted Eagle. Usually only several birds overwinter in Serbia – the biggest count ever was less than 10. Their claim to fame?

While there are some two dozen birding spots in Belgrade, Serbia, that stand out, in this guideblog I will focus on the river Danube and its floodplain, inside the Important Bird Area “Confluence of the Sava and the Danube Rivers”. I have participated in something like twenty Christmas Bird Counts since I started birding in 2005. And now for two years I have been a compiler for the Queens County Christmas Bird Count, which is a whole other pile of headaches. A Hermit Thrush at the Queens County Farm Museum was a nice find.

In front of us, the river is two miles wide… and it is paved with birds: smaller groups of Greater White-fronted and Greylag Geese , numerous Mute Swans and Mallards , plus Eurasian Teals , Gadwalls , Common Pochards , a few Ferruginous and Tufted Ducks , Common Goldeneyes and several Smews. While entering our double kayak I asked Andrew Hester, a local bird expert, if bilharzia is present in the shallows of the Ngotwane Dam, further down the river. On the first day of the Great Texas Birding Classic , the Swarovski Roadside Hawks racked up over 180 species on the Upper Coast. The rest of the day looked something like this… Sunrise at Salineño for tons of RGV specialties , including a decidedly unmanky Muscovy Duck ! But one day does not a Big Week make.

Amazingly and quite contrary to what you would believe from the gloomy news most of these birds have since recovered and are doing well. This 57,331 acre refuge was set aside as a critical wintering location for tens of thousands of Geese, Ducks and Sandhill Cranes. Nearly 30,000 of these acres is set aside as dry wilderness habitat for other birds, animals and other various living creatures. There was also a small raft of Ruddy Ducks.

Alkborough Flats is an excellent place to go birding and walking and is where the River Trent and River Ouse join to meet the River Humber. Bird hides have been built and two small car-parks and one of these has wheelchair access to the trails. Of course there were many other species to observe from the hide and they need a mention!

I am a birder and I can claim that out of Serbia’s total of 350+ bird species, highly urbanised inner city areas of Belgrade hold almost 100 birds, while the outskirts have more than 200 species. eBird says that, at the time of writing (April 2017), there are some ten hotspots that have crossed the 100 bird species mark.

Lake Apopka Restoration Area in Lake County Florida is fast-becoming one of the best bird magnets in all of Florida. But all this changed in the early 1940s with the establishment of vegetable muck farms on the lake’s north shore. Fish populations plummeted and bird populations declined.
