Seasonally, a good number of ducks were there too along with loons and other choice waterbirds. Known as the Crested Bobwhite , this small quail persists in any number of weedy fields, even lives on some coffee farms. Brown Jays also flutter by and those are just a few of the species that still occur.

The Veliko Ratno Island birdlist is about 170 species long, of which more than 90 were observed from the Dorcol Promenade. Highlight species: Ferruginous Duck , Goosander , Red-breasted Merganser , Red-crested Pochard , Greater Scaup , Velvet Scoter , Black-throated Diver. In March and November, Common Cranes are a possibility.

In the book, one picture stood out in particular: the White-headed Duck. There were only a few dozen of these ducks left and the photographer – using old-fashioned analog film – took just one, very fuzzy shot. Even so, the idea of one day going out to find this rare duck appealed to me. Time to look for that UFO myself.

Much like my visit to Malheur NWR, the actual wet Land areas are flooded once the cooperative farming is over. There was also a small raft of Ruddy Ducks. US species – 243.

On entering the small village of Alkborough from either West Halton or Burton upon Stather you will see two brown signs on the church stone wall with a duck on, which indicate the area you need to head for. These reeds were an excellent place to observe Bearded Reedlings , though and a bird species that people come to the area to see.

With 154 eBirded species almost single-handedly spotted by the UK expat Geoff Laight, the Paljuvi is the latest addition to the top-5 list. I am a birder and I can claim that out of Serbia’s total of 350+ bird species, highly urbanised inner city areas of Belgrade hold almost 100 birds, while the outskirts have more than 200 species. eBird says that, at the time of writing (April 2017), there are some ten hotspots that have crossed the 100 bird species mark.

If there was any doubt we were near to water, this flock of Black-bellied Whistling Ducks made it absolutely clear. When I showed it to our guide , he indicated that it was not a commonly seen species. Nevertheless, the light was still gentle and golden. Farmhouses dotted the landscape, but our attention was directed to the water.
