Black-bellied Whistling-Ducks , Muscovy Ducks and Blue-winged Teals were around us, together with Green , Great and Little Blue Herons , Cattle and Great White Egrets , Black-crowned and Yellow-crowned Night-Herons , plus one locally rare Pinnated Bittern in the floating vegetation, as well as several dozen Neotropical Cormorants.

Most of the time, I know enough about an area, or have done some research into what is found there, that I am pleasantly surprised at best. This 57,331 acre refuge was set aside as a critical wintering location for tens of thousands of Geese, Ducks and Sandhill Cranes. There was also a small raft of Ruddy Ducks.

We saw sparrows–a total of 14 species–and we saw many other great prairie birds, and we often saw them perched on posts. I don’t know much about prairies, but I have discovered that there is more to them than just grass, and that they are home to hundreds of butterfly and bee species and thousands of moth species.

Keep in mind that the special nature reserves (dark green on the park map) enjoy the highest level of protection and are off limits to visitors (possible only with research permits issued by the park authorities).

After lazing in the heat I decided to visit the forest pools one last time, hoping for another sighting of Hartlaub’s Duck or White-bellied Kingfisher. I even managed to shoot a video with hands trembling of excitement, probably a first of the species. Isaac, my local guide was hesitantly following. Thainamu chose a snipe !

Harper, a farm boy, had never heard of feeding stations and had also, apparently, never before taken a good hard look at birds. So, the Eastern Kingbird ”is one of the Tyrant Flycatchers, Tyrannidae –America’s largest bird family–365 different species.” White article on bird feeding stations.

Personally, I love exploring new hotspots and discovering new or unusual species when visiting a country. This phase is to familiarize with the species that can be seen. Search for species (or subspecies) endemic to the area visited. Search for my target species (i.e. research papers). There was none in Serbia.
