Birding Tradition: the New Year’s Day List

Starting the New Year by trying to see as many species as possible is something of a birding tradition. My diary notes that the New Year dawned grey and windy, but I rose early, walked six miles before breakfast and noted a modest 26 species of birds. The latter are great bruisers of ducks, built like a small battle ship.

At the time of writing, Uganda has 16 hotspots with 400+ so far eBirded species, of which one has almost 600 species.

According to eBird , just over 200 species have been observed at the refuge and just under 1,000 checklists have been submitted. The namesake “lake” generally only exists when there is enough runoff during the spring, as the area was extensively modified for farming years ago.

And, of course, the reputation of certain species of birds as troublemakers for humans is a problem in bird conservation, so this is worth watching. Close to 5% of turkeys being farmed in Minnesota have been or shortly will be destroyed , and the virus is also affecting chickens. Or, even, many of them.

Alkborough Flats

Alkborough Flats were only formed in 2006 when the River Humber burst its banks and flooded 450 hectares of farmland and it is now a haven for wildlife. These reeds were an excellent place to observe Bearded Reedlings , though and a bird species that people come to the area to see. and several Black-tailed Godwits.

After lazing in the heat I decided to visit the forest pools one last time, hoping for another sighting of Hartlaub’s Duck or White-bellied Kingfisher. I even managed to shoot a video with hands trembling of excitement, probably a first of the species. Isaac, my local guide was hesitantly following. Thainamu chose a snipe !

There were, however, compensations, such as finding breeding Yellow Wagtails on a nearby farm where I’d never seen them before. WinGS volunteers visit gull roost sites, counting six key species: Black-headed Gull, Common Gull, Mediterranean Gull, Lesser Black-backed Gull, Herring Gull and Great Black-backed Gull.
