Birding in Costa Rica, August, 2022- News and Recommendations

10,000 Birds

In the northern temperate zone, August is a time of hazy, lazy dog days, a month when you soak up that last bit of summer during outdoor picnics and shorebird chases. The woods and fields lack much of the bird song of May and June but coastal habitats and wetlands are another story. Harpy Eagle!

15 Australian Birds (Episode 1)

10,000 Birds

It has been more than 5 years since I last went to Australia, and I was even less of a qualified bird photographer then than I am now. So, the basic idea is to show 15 species of Australian birds in each post and give you the usual trivia about them. The female looks a bit duller but I was assured it has a beautiful soul.

The return of the Old Man

10,000 Birds

There’s something wonderfully primeval about the Northern Bald Ibis: it has the look of a bird that really ought to be extinct. Birding Shanghai in February 2022

10,000 Birds

I just want to point out it could be much worse.

Birding the Kruger Park (6): Pafuri area part 2

10,000 Birds

This is the last post covering my time birding the Kruger Park in November 2018. A study on the diet of the African Harrier-Hawk starts rather pompously: “Feeding is an indispensable activity in the life of birds. I guess blushing is easier if you have a bald face like this species. No clue what it is though.

Birding the Kruger Park (4): Letaba area

10,000 Birds

It is near a river, attracting some birds that like to eat wet food. As the national bird of Namibia, Zambia, and Zimbabwe, the African Fish Eagle is usually very busy whenever it stays in these countries, giving speeches, opening shopping centers, etc. The birds I asked about this pretended not to be related to anyone though.
