The return of the Old Man

10,000 Birds

There’s something wonderfully primeval about the Northern Bald Ibis: it has the look of a bird that really ought to be extinct. The fact that it’s not is quite surprising, as this curious bird has come very close to the brink. Sadly, they no longer breed in Algeria, while in Turkey no free-flying birds remain. (In

Rarer than Tigers: the Indian Wild Dog

10,000 Birds

Birds included common species such as Black Drongos , Jungle Babblers and a Hoopoe. We are observing a Dhole , also called Asiatic or Indian Wild Dog. A hundred metres down the track, several more Dholes await us, totalling eleven dogs. Even in protected areas of north-east India, prey densities are very low.

Birding in Costa Rica, August, 2022- News and Recommendations

A Bird Presentation in Shanghai

10,000 Birds

For some reason that I do not quite understand myself – given that I really rather dislike children and am not too positive about the rest of humanity either – I recently put up a little display of bird photos inside my Shanghai compound, which I share (as the only foreigner) with about 1700 Chinese. A visit to Dog Lake

10,000 Birds

On the final leg of my “Old Home Week”, I travel out to Dog Lake, a pristine high mountain lake, surrounded by mature Ponderosa Pines. With shore side access limited to the northern end of the lake, that protection allows for a large population of water based birds. Forest Service, on a forest fire crew.
