Now I’ve written before about how careless this country is with species, having lost around 60 endemics since the arrival of man to introduced species and hunting. Broadly speaking the case seems to be that it isn’t different enough.

An influx of Great Egrets

This section of the Great Northern Highway has an impressive list on eBird of 191 species along the length of highway that crosses Roebuck Plains. They have arrived in large numbers this time, but as with all of these bird species that arrive during flood events we don’t know where they came from. A few of the many Great Egrets.

The Little Big Year 2018: Best Birds of the Year!

In the end, I truly did set out to reduce the number of birds that I feature here from 1302, my years total species, down to 10-12. Spending time in Darwin Australia, has made that our #1 spot to return to after the year was done. Just off the coast of Caines Australia lays the Great Barrier Reef.

Red-backed Kingfishers

The Red-backed Kingfisher hunts large insects and small reptiles and can often be seen perched on open dead trees. On a recent visit to an inland area not far from the township of Broome we were lucky enough to not only observe this species, but also take some photographs from a close distance. One then decided to puff out its throat at us and we left them to relax in the tree before they headed off to hunt in the evening.
