Note the beaked mouth, used for hunting invetebrates. They’re there, and for that reason you may not pay much attention to them.

I walked slowly around the tree and then left them to have a quiet day in the park before they go hunting at night. I didn’t hang around, but took a few photos to capture the Tawny Frogmouth family that has once again bred close to home. The streetlights aid with attracting insects, so it makes perfect sense to live amongst the houses.

They were also busy eating very small bivalves and their hunting was proving to be very successful. In a few weeks’ time they will be into their breeding season and there will be a moment of close contact. Pied Oystercatchers keeping physically distant. There are currently several Swamp Harriers that are hunting across the floodplains and the other birds are nervous. There are thousands of Whiskered Terns and White-winged Black Terns and it is near impossible to take a photo of anything without having a tern photo-bomb the shot! A few of the many Great Egrets.

The area is used as a hunting ground for large raptors including the White-bellied Sea-Eagle and Brahminy Kite. In recent years there have been Pied Oystercatchers attempting to breed along the shores of Roebuck Bay. By coincidence the return of the migratory shorebirds is at the same time as the Pied Oystercatchers breed here.

More importantly the airport in Nadi (pronounced Nandi) on the main island of Viti Levu is a major air hub and frequent stop on flights between the United States and Australia or New Zealand. In Australia we often observe Peregrine Falcons and they are the subspecies Falco peregrinus macropus. Usually when we observe Peregrine Falcons they are hunting shorebirds around the Broome coastline and you don’t always get a chance to see all of their characteristics.

Eastern Reef Egrets, mostly white phase, hunt the shallow reefs when the low tide allows. Red tailed Tropicbirds nest here in small numbers and are one of the major reasons birders visit. On land a small number of migratory waders visit; especially Pacific Plover and Ruddy Turnstone.

In my younger days I always kept year lists: my best ever year was 1986, when I topped the 1,000 mark thanks to trips to Australia, Kenya and various European destinations. Birdwatchers love making lists, with the year list one of the most important. Later in the month, a flock of several hundred Avocets on the River Alde was also memorable.

Little Egrets [below] were hunting close by and there was a sole Intermediate Egret at the other end of the swamp. The rain had filled these wetlands causing wetland species to spread out and there were a few species conspicuous by their absence.

I was able to convince Murray Hunt to take us out for a morning cruise on the Daintree River, despite late notice, and that it was a Sunday morning that looked to be really crappy weather. The Australia count is now 169. The RV center was prompt, and we found Lake Placid RV Park, and I was off and running.

What I knew of Austria was very little: The Sound of Music, mountains and skiing, Vienna, Hitler’s birthplace, Krampus, good beer, and often confused with Australia. Perhaps most exciting was a Northern Goshawk that we spotted hunting along the river a couple of times.
