The species ranges widely across the Pacific, as its scientific name suggests, from the Revillagigedo Islands off Mexico to the Japanese Bonin Islands to New South Wales in Australia. But it also occurs in the Indian Ocean, from Aldabra near Madagascar to Western Australia.

The Short-eared Owl has an enormous range, occurring on every continent except for Australia and Antarctica. In New York State , however, the Short-eared Owl is considered an endangered species and it has likely been extirpated as a breeder in several of its former strongholds.

Later in the year we were able to travel around the north of Western Australia. Our 2020 year list stands at 324 for Victoria and the north of Western Australia combined, so we are more than happy with that under current circumstances. We then returned home to Broome and waited for restrictions on local travel to lift.
