However, there had been reports of a Scaup mixed in with the flock, which at first glance I thought this bird might be. The latter, by the way, is a rare but regular vagrant to the British Isles, first recorded here in 1987, but seen annually in recent years. Here they are applying the metal leg band… then measuring the bill to discern the gender of the bird (males bills are about 10% longer than females). They are currently running their Second-Annual Banded Pelican Contest. Part of the final inspection is to check the pouch for any problems.

In Costa Rica, we enjoy healthy numbers of Whimbrels , a few annual wintering Long-billed Curlews that choose to lord over the flats of the Gulf of Nicoya, and good numbers of an equally impressive prairie bird, the Marbled Godwit. Photos were taken, a report was made and other local birders made plans to visit the following day.
