If I don’t get it this time the Black Woodpecker will become an official nemesis bird. I will see at least 500 species for the year.

I’d love to have known where and when the Great Spotted Woodpecker in my photograph below was ringed, but though the ring is clearly visible, the number stamped on it isn’t. However, in recent years there’s been a growing trend to mark bigger birds, such as wildfowl and waders, with either colour rings, or Darvic plastic rings.

This was where I set up my bird feeders, just one at first, then expanding as everyone expressed delight in seeing the Carolina Chickadees, Dark-eyed Juncos, and Downy Woodpeckers. I picked up a Downy Woodpecker, an every-day visitor. I was shocked when I found the first body, a female Towhee. The window silhouettes were gone.

February 2013. At the nearest tree is a Black-rumped Flameback woodpecker, and higher, from the treecrown, a Crested Serpent Eagle is keeping an eye on all comings and goings. In front of us, in the Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve one wild Grey Junglefowl runs across the road. It is one of the ancestors of domestic fowl.

In 2013, Hurricane Sandy cut up the east coast leaving a swath of destruction in its wake. We netted Pileated Woodpecker and Eastern Bluebird at Sandy Run Park in Kitty Hawk, but dipped on the Fish Crows that frequent the nearby Wal-Mart.
