This thrush is extremely common in urban and suburban Germany and one of the most conspicuous bird species here, comparable to the American Robin in North America. Because this was such a common species, we lacked quantitative data to be certain that this lack was an actual “situation” and not just the ordinary seasonal variation.

Burrowing Owls also gained greater recognition after a 2006 film, “ Hoot ,” was released. These owls use the tunnels of other species as their nesting burrows, and so can be found associated with ground squirrels, tortoises, and prairie dogs. Unlike many other owl species, the male and the female are the same size.

I’d only ever had two encounters with Tundra Swans in Queens, one in November of 2006 and a flock of thirty-three, believed to have been forced down by a storm, in November of 2014. But both species of swans present had enough neck to reach something to eat on the bottom of the pond. I assume the water was too deep.

Here in Serbia, in the south of the continent, this species is a proper rarity. Yet, in the early 19th century it seems to have been a regular species overwintering alongside other geese, but after 1840s, the next birds were recorded only in 1955. There are 5 published records since mid-20th century, the last one of six birds in 2006.

BNA says that both species share a passion for brine flies, and tend to share habitat. Adult Black-necked Stilts have a tinge of pink on the breast, and juveniles have pink-based bills.
