We also knew we had discovered Africa’s next hot birding destination.

Hunting sandhill cranes in Kentucky is a bad idea from a public relations standpoint, considering the growing cadre of birders and nature enthusiasts for whom cranes are a touchstone species. Initiating a hunting season on a large, charismatic species like a crane is no way to resuscitate hunting.

In June 2006, Jane and I visited a chimpanzee sanctuary near Girona, Spain. Tika and her longtime mate, Kobuk, had raised eight litters of puppies together and were enjoying their retirement years in the home of my friend, Anne. Stories about animals rescuing members of their own and other species, including humans, abound.
