When they surface, the tips of the snout, biosonar “melon” and dorsal fins appear simultaneously, the tail rarely showing before diving. We sailed right into a group of more than a dozen Hoatzins (cover photo, by Tyler Ficker) with their orange mohawks and blue facial skin. Later, we would be seeing dolphins every day.

It starts in late July when shorebirds from the Arctic Tundra, Great Plains, and New England beaches amass at beaches, agricultural areas, and mere rain puddles throughout the tip of the peninsula. This is how it looks like: Or at sunset: A species I did not come for from Shanghai is the Black-crowned Night Heron. Its species name graydoni is in honor of Philip Newenham Graydon (1864-1940), a British planter in Sabah. Why that makes Mr. Graydon worthy of having a bird species named after him is a mystery to me.

Red-billed Pigeons and Yellow-green Vireos sing and join a morning chorus of Rufous-naped and Cabanis’s Wrens , White-tipped Dove , and the hooting of Lesson’s Motmots. Getting to actually see four species, in the last two weeks, and to hear two more is almost unheard of in my experience. The Great Horned Owls that live in the palm trees right above our RV have returned and brought with them a pair of fledglings. That was no deterrent from landing right in the middle of the road.

I learned of the trip right as it had been delayed and made a vow that I would be on that ship. Finally in 1799, the first visitors on this volcanic land were a group of French seal hunters who were after the fur seals that can be found hauled out on the beaches for fur and oil, which almost wiped out the local population of the species.

I mean you have two year gulls, three year gulls and even gulls that take four years to mature, and the plumage of all these species changes as they mature. The top photo shows a first winter California Gull ( Larus californicus ) on the right and a non-breeding adult on the left. The pink bill with the black tip was a good start.

Mottled Owls , one of the more common owl species in Costa Rica, also called in the distance and the vocalizations of a Common Pauraque were added to the natural mix. One of these uber cool birds responded straight away to a recording of its song and then flew in to call from a typical potoo perch, right at the tip top of a dead snag.
