I have been lucky enough to get close views of two massive Old World Vulture species, the Eurasian Griffon and the Egyptian Vulture. Here in Mexico, I can almost always count on Black Vultures and Turkey Vultures to pad each outing’s list by two species. Black Vultures are a bit smaller than all these other species.

As soon as I looked at it more closely it was quite clear that it wasn’t a scaup of any species, despite its resemblance to a North American Lesser Scaup. Lesser Scaup has only a slight black tip to the beak, while this bird had a clear black band. My hunch was Tufted Duck x Pochard.

European Robin The start of the pier immediately produced two of Ijmuiden’s typical species, Purple Sandpiper and Rock Pipit. At the tip of the pier, several birders had set up their scopes for sea watching and I spent some time here as well. However, Rock Pipit was very common for the first few hundred meters along the pier.

One of the reasons that I usually start each year’s species list with a visit to the wetlands of Lake Cuitzeo is that the site offers so many species that I can find nowhere else. It may seem like a grown bird, but the rufous tips on the wing coverts of this Cocoa Thrush tell us it is still in its first year of life. I had never seen other young thrushes before that last walk I just mentioned as the other species tend to breed in more remote environments far away from concentrated human settlement.

It is a relatively small hornbill, and not very shy – some photos below were taken on the campgrounds of Kruger Park, which more or less seem to be the species’ natural habitat by now. According to the HBW, there are 41 species of African Barbets and 34 species of Asian Barbets. There are also 14 species of New World Barbets and 2 species of Toucan-Barbets (all in South America). T he Golden-throated Barbet (Baihualing, Yunnan) has an interesting species name, franklinii.

This is how it looks like: Or at sunset: A species I did not come for from Shanghai is the Black-crowned Night Heron. Its species name graydoni is in honor of Philip Newenham Graydon (1864-1940), a British planter in Sabah. Why that makes Mr. Graydon worthy of having a bird species named after him is a mystery to me.

The Red Knot are now very red and they are the last species of shorebird to leave Broome. One of the birds is a juvenile from last year’s breeding and still has a dull bill tip and pale legs. The shorebirds kept lifting off briefly and then returning to the same area. They will continue to migrate for another fortnight.

It turns out that it was the un-illustrated western race of the then White-collared Seedeater, which has since been deservedly elevated to its own species, the Cinnamon-rumped Seedeater.)
