One of the small cities south of Tucson Arizona, Amado, has a very small pond, right along highway 19, also known as the Nogales Highway. The latest of the “Amado” surprises is the appearance of an American White Pelican. Here is the American White Pelican when it first arrived. Here is how much better it is looking now.

The system starts with a small pool bursting with Little Egrets , Pygmy and Great Cormorants , Black-headed Gulls … I am driving by it and, through the opening in the bushes, see a… Pelican! Such a large bird in such a small pool and only the first of many Dalmatian Pelicans I will see that day.

Birding Porto Lagos Lagoons, Greece, or the snake-cold Vergina lager

Fortunately, late June is the right season for the locally brewed snake-cold Vergina lager in the deepest shade by some gull-filled beach. Dalmatian Pelicans and Eurasian Spoonbills were flying above the beach, sometimes above the hotel garden, while Golden Oriole and Scops Owl could be heard.

And this remnant lake is very, very birdy: The dominant birds, besides those American White Pelicans seen at the right, were Northern Shovelers — hundreds of them. I normally see Ruddy Ducks on the lake’s deepest waters, and as I said, there are no deep waters in the Lake Cuitzeo right now.
