Mule Deer have always been pretty common in this area, but I got quite a surprise when I cleared a small hill in the road, and nearly ran over a male Pronghorn Antelope , right in the middle of the road. Finally we came to a cross road, where I went straight, and he turned right. It was good to be back!

Taking advantage of my son, Desmond, having this past Friday off from school our small family decided to do a three-day trip somewhere. I’ll get right down to it. At the beach there were non stop Magnificent Frigatebirds overhead, Sandwich Terns and Royal Terns working the waves, and Brown Pelicans dropping in regularly.

As we walked from the car park to the bird hide we noticed a family of Magpie Geese on the edge of the billabong. Family of Magpie Geese. We have Restless Flycatchers in Broome and this is another species with a similar scissor like grinding call, so you recognise the family group immediately. Well, you are right! Shark Bay is an enormous feature, a huge bay surrounded by deserty-scrub right on the edge of the tropics. I have wanted to see a representative of this family for twenty years so it was quite a day as far as lifers went. Osprey, Australian Pelicans and Pacific Gulls also patrolled the waters. The National Park is unusual because it offers very few facilities compared to most, but there is a sealed road right into the small car park and a shade shelter with a table and chairs and information about the park. Beyond the Mutton Hole wetlands we soon stopped to observe a Sarus Crane family feeding near Corduroy Creek and then we encountered more and more Brolga and Sarus Cranes all the way to Karumba.
