The third weekend of January, I travelled to the coastal city of Acapulco to give a seminar on family finances at a church there. And my one lifer for the trip was a family of Rufous-naped Wrens that apparently live in the same garden. We saw lots of the usual Heron, Egret, Cormorant, and Pelican suspects.

Together, they are placed in the family Threskiornithidae, and they’re related to herons and egrets, pelicans, and the strange Hamerkop and Shoebill. Meanwhile, perhaps the AOU will now have enough published evidence to revise its subfamily treatment of this interesting family.

Brown Pelican – This is a bird that will just take some luck while I am staring at the ocean. Either way, the odds of actually getting a Brown Pelican in Queens are pretty low. Great Shearwater – At this point, seabirds are my weakest family in Queens with the most species having reported in the borough that I have not seen.

Back in December when my family and I were in southern California we planned a day trip out to Crystal Cove State Park in southern Orange County. Escambia Bay was fairly calm, and it was easy to pick out the dark silhouettes of Brown Pelicans floating on the water. A lone Great Blue Heron stalked prey in the shallows, eventually taking flight when a family (and their dog) made it to the sand.

Part of its attraction lies in it being a monotypic bird in the family Hypocoliidae – there are no other bird species in its genus and family. As a proof, two Dalmatian Pelicans are flying low above us, while a Bluethroat disappears into the nearby bush. Or because it is endangered – it isn’t. The Sun is just rising.

Taking advantage of my son, Desmond, having this past Friday off from school our small family decided to do a three-day trip somewhere. Because when we look at the birds that make up the family Sulidae – not just the tropical boobies, but their burly temperate-zone cousins the gannets as well – we see a pretty incredible group of birds. Along the way we witnessed a Great Blue Heron rookery with a fly-by Bullock’s Oriole , a pod of American White Pelicans just chilling, a pair of Red-tailed Hawks making goo-goo eyes at each other, Cliff Swallows swarming like mosquitoes, and Long-billed Curlews that nearly blended into their scrubby surroundings.

By the cliffs we find several Eurasian Crag-Martins and a consolation species – a family of Golden Eagles in the air! Among them are Dalmatian Pelicans , so big and lazy. The WBW remained elusive like a bear (for me at least – a month ago, Georgos met a mother with two cubs, took a few photos, then dropped down and played dead).
