Most websites – particularly those specifically targeting kids – do not mention the fact that juvenile Australian Pelicans have shown cannibalism ( source ). On the plus side, a website of the Australian Government provides a printout for an origami of an Australian Pelican. Disappointing.

Ringer Anhingas and darters , cormorants and shags , frigatebirds , gannets and boobies , pelicans , and the tropicbirds all share a characteristic found in no other living bird: Their feet are totipalmate.

We also went to the Toora Poo Ponds where we were able to add Australian Pelicans , Royal Spoonbills , Yellow-billed Spoonbill , Eastern Great Egret , Hardhead , Eurasian Skylark and more.

The order Suliformes holds a lot of special birds from anhingas and darters to cormorants and shags as well as frigatebirds, pelicans, and tropicbirds. But the sleekest of the sulids may be found in the family Sulidae. This booby’s blue feet mirror the color of clear skies from pale aquamarine to deep turquoise.

As we wandered along the trail we soon encountered family groups of both White-winged Fairywrens and Variegated Fairywrens. Little Black Cormorants and Australian Pelican. Apparently they breed to the south and return to feed at Lake Bindegolly. Australian Pelicans soaring in the thermals. Orange Chat.

Furthermore we have another very special stork-like bird, the regal Shoebill , previously known as the Whale-headed Stork but now placed in its own family. During breeding season, their white plumage turns a delicate pink color, a lovely sight indeed. The Saddle-billed Stork has a similar Africa-wide distribution as the Marabou.

Firstly I would like to just do a little update on the Pied Oystercatcher family that were a large part of my life for the last few weeks of 2014. The adult Pied Oystercatchers were still at their non-breeding site at Gantheaume Point and will no doubt lay their first eggs for 2015 in the first week of July.

Both are common, really common, and both are essentially indistinguishable in non-breeding plumage. One interesting experience here was finding a baby terrapin on the road and picking it up to move it only for peter to call out a Common Iora , one of my two lifer families of the day. Next we drove to the local bird breeding centre.
