The water level had gone up a little since our last trip, but it is not flowing right across the highway at any point and the pot-holes are slowly being repaired. There is more traffic now than there has been for several months, but you can get right to the edge of the highway and let them pass.

In the southwestern of Western Australia (not where these photos were taken), the Little Corella actually is an introduced bird species listed as a category 3 declared pest ( source ). On the plus side, a website of the Australian Government provides a printout for an origami of an Australian Pelican.

You don’t actually have to go too far from Broome inland to find taller trees and different bird species. We went for a wander to see what species were further upstream and accidentally flushed a Barking Owl. Well, you are right! The crocodile will then float up and have a look around.

In the time we spent on Culebra I saw 49 species of birds, not bad for an island outside of the wintering grounds for most neotropical migrants and only measuring eleven miles square. I spotted eight species in my time on Culebra. Of herons and egrets I only saw two species.

Shark Bay is an enormous feature, a huge bay surrounded by deserty-scrub right on the edge of the tropics. I have wanted to see a representative of this family for twenty years so it was quite a day as far as lifers went. They are one of the smaller species of Bottlenoses (I can’t pretend to understand dolphin taxonomy).

In Broome it is very easy to get 100 species on January 1st, which looks great for a while, but then you realise that before long other Beat Writers have jumped on aeroplanes and wandered further from home than we have. The driveway also showed up some large, floppy Pheasant Coucals (there is no word that applies to this species better than floppy, they remind me of my parents’ cocker spaniel) and some Whistling Kites circling over a small (managed) bushfire, and some White-faced Herons. This was certainly a more leisurely view!

The lake was filled with families of Dusky Moorhens and Purple Swamphens (or Pukeko as we call them in New Zealand), all tending small groups of black chicks. Magpie-larks are neither magpies nor larks but are the largest of the monarch-flycatchers, and the most terrestrial of the family.

Beyond the Mutton Hole wetlands we soon stopped to observe a Sarus Crane family feeding near Corduroy Creek and then we encountered more and more Brolga and Sarus Cranes all the way to Karumba. Silver Gulls , Crested Terns, Caspian Terns, Gull-billed Terns, Pelicans and a White-bellied Sea-Eagle were observed in this area.

The National Park is unusual because it offers very few facilities compared to most, but there is a sealed road right into the small car park and a shade shelter with a table and chairs and information about the park. As we wandered along the trail we soon encountered family groups of both White-winged Fairywrens and Variegated Fairywrens.
