I didn’t really have time to stop, but as I was passing by, I saw hundreds of American White Pelicans fly up and thought I’d better take a drive through and see what else was there. I spotted a Eurasian Wigeon amongst the American Wigeon right out of the gate, but that wasn’t the best sighting of the day.

Right, smack dad in the middle of Summer Lake Wildlife Refuge. Not another person for miles, and a pair of friendly, well, almost, Great Horned Owls living in the tree right above us. Two full days at Hart Mountain Wildlife Refuge, three days at Dog Lake, and a short visit to Upper Cottonwood Lake brought back many great memories, in addition to a nice list of birds. Last Saturday we were able to visit Berry Springs Nature Reserve late in the afternoon, which is located to the south of Darwin and alongside the Territory Wildlife Park. The whales, the dolphins, and the seabirds all combined to put on an amazing show, with one Humpback Whale even coming to the surface right next to the boat and then diving beneath us. Though they haven’t rated a mention thus far, Brown Pelicans were everywhere and are awesome. It was amazing.

And I’m glad we did because it’s a great wildlife destination that merits a look from anyone with a passion for the wild. Shark Bay is an enormous feature, a huge bay surrounded by deserty-scrub right on the edge of the tropics. Osprey, Australian Pelicans and Pacific Gulls also patrolled the waters.
