Even people with no other interest in wildlife, who couldn’t tell a sparrow from an ostrich (or even a dolphin from a fish) love dolphins. Leaving from the harbour on boats were tours to swim with one of New Zealand’s most endangered mammal species, the Hector’s Dolphin. Which has always mystified me slightly.

I've heard someone saw some coyotes about a year ago but I haven't seen or heard them. Birds seem to be mostly some kind of common looking grayish speckled yard birds that I don't know what they are.

The refuge, which was created to protect the now extinct Dusky Seaside Sparrow , is not normally open to the public, which helps keep the rails and other wildlife from being unduly bothered by the public. For me, at least, it was a life mammal! Though it was distant it was still a welcome sight.

It was here I managed to finally find my Brown Hyaena, making that family the first family of mammals of which I have seen every species (Spotted, Brown, Striped Hyaenas and Aardwolf)). The park also has Cheetahs and Painted Wolves (and while I didn’t see the later, they are fairly reliable).

Despite the golf course, this place host all manner of birds and mammals. In fact, we saw two species of monkey, our only sloths, lots of coatis, and my rarest ever mammal sighting—a Jaguarundi —right on site. House Sparrow. But as far as habitat and biodiversity on the premises, Radisson Summit dramatically exceeded my hopes.
