Burrowing Owls are notoriously difficult to spot, even for the trained eye, since they are low to the ground and blend in to their background. This is what a group looks like when you arrive in their territory and they are at their burrow entrance. There are actually four birds in this photo.

Interestingly, Black-winged Stilts display laterality – that is, they preferentially use one eye (the right one) to find prey. Also, pecks that followed right-eye detection were more likely to be successful than pecks that followed left-eye detection, as evinced by the occurrence of swallowing after pecking ( source ).

I was recently reminded of the rich avifauna found in the Caribbean lowlands while guiding a small group of birders from Texas. Often seen at the right sites. If you are birding in the Caribbean lowlands and hear something that sounds kind of like an old train whistle (sort of), it’s probably a Broad-billed Motmot.

We flew from Broome to Manchester on September 28th via Perth and arrived to rain early on September 29th, but we were soon on the train to Habrough and over those two and a half hours we soon had a list started of UK birds!
