Birding on Texel in Late October

Although not as exciting as Helgoland, which I covered here recently , Texel is an excellent location in its own right. Bohemian Waxwing The morning of my second day was partly devoted to a Long-tailed Duck in the Mokbaai at the island’s southern tip. I also saw a few Snow Buntings on the beach near the lighthouse.

Gullmania in Costa Rica

In subsequent weeks and days, this local mega was seen by many a local birder, many of whom hired local boats to take them out to the tip of the dock and nearby buoys frequented by the Heerman’s (once more, birding gives a boost to the local economy). It’s a bird species I have expected for some time, an overdue bird if you will.

Our group, led by world-renowned guide Herbert Byaruhanga, piled into canoes ostensibly to search for a variety of papyrus and wetland specialties, but really we were just looking for the shoebill. Nor is the Shoebill the national bird of Uganda.

Highlights from the 2022 Arenal Christmas Count in Costa Rica

White-collared was the most common but we also had many very good looks at Chestnut-collared along with a few Gray-rumped , two Lesser Swallow-tailed right at the end of the day, and views of both elusive species- White-chinned and Spot-fronted Swifts ! 16 Hummingbird Species. Quite a few hummingbirds were around.
