The Yellowthroat group is an odd collection of bird species. The Belding’s Yellowthroat is easier to see, but only if you visit the southern tip of Baja California. I live right in the middle of this species’ range, and have seen it ten times so far. Both are marsh-dwelling species. See the difference? Neither do I!

I was about 90% sure I had seen a group of Gray Kingbirds at the Emerald Coast Visitor’s Center on Okaloosa Island. I couldn’t even believe it – there was a Gray Kingbird right there! I had my camera with me, and I quickly confirmed the field marks: overall gray color, lack of a white-tipped tail, pale belly.

The Great Horned Owls that live in the palm trees right above our RV have returned and brought with them a pair of fledglings. Last week, a good friend, Dan Weisz gave me a tip on the location of a family of Burrowing Owls that were extremely easy to access. That was no deterrent from landing right in the middle of the road.

Spring is in the air, and all around the Baja desert I am seeing a plethora of species, all looking for love, in what appears to the right places. Last Sunday, it was never as obvious as it was with the small group of Phainopepla , Phainopepla nitens. I thoroughly enjoyed watching them swoop erratically from tree to tree to cactus.

They are large groups of birds of all different kinds of species. Also in large flocks were black Common Scimitarbills , part of a group of tree living relatives of the hoopoes that look like pretty much no other bird on Earth. Even the coat of arms of Sao Tome and Principe consists of a Red-footed Falcon (in spite of the fact that this is clearly a Peregrine ) on the left and an African Grey Parrot on the right holding a shield with a palm tree. The best season is December, followed by June-July. The best seasons are November and March-April.

When you think about it, this is pretty remarkable; even with all the excellent bird photographers available, it must have taken hundreds of hours to locate good quality photographs in which the bird looks towards the right. King Eider to the left, Common Eider to the right. On perched birds, wingtips do not reach near tail tip.

So, I anxiously followed the “Flock to Marion 2022” Facebook group in anticipation for open cabins to come up for sale. Then, to finish the week, we visited the famous, and not necessarily for all the right reasons, Malhuer Wildlife Refuge. The first part of the week, we parked the RV at a campground right on the water, of Dog Lake, 20 miles southwest of Lakeview, Oregon. I only ran across this one Clark’s Grebe mixed in with in the groups of Westerns.

This young Cedar Waxwing, looks very much like, well, just about any other young bird, except it is starting to show its yellow tip on the end of its tail. Finally, one flew right into a piece of dead brush right above where I had been watching for a return of the Village Rail, and I finally did get a quick glimpse, and a decent shot.

The small group was a good counterpart to the large, convivial ABA Safari group of 98 birders. That’s a lot, and the organizers of the safari did an excellent job of creating an environment that offered small group birding during the day and a birders party every night. Note the small central group of shimmering orange feathers on her otherwise white throat with lines of dark spots. The notch at the tip of the second tail feather is the best way to distinguish the Rufous Hummingbird from Allen’s. Note how much green is in the uppertail coverts and also the dark green tips of the tail.

Well, it took about ten minutes to find out, as I was sitting in the RV, right at water’s edge, photographing a lovely pair of Rufus-banded Honeyeaters , when a small, 2-meter-long Crocodile came rushing up out of the water, right at my door! I cut this out of a huge group of birds, in order to show the Magpie Geese.

It stops those thousands of migrating birds flying across the Gulf of Mexico and directs them right onto the trees, fields, sanctuaries, beaches along the Bolivar Peninsula, where they hopefully find food and fresh water. Right now we’re pretty much a three species town, Ravens with a chance of Hoary Redpolls and a sprinkling of Rock Ptarmigan. (I The peak of this activity is over in about a week, and the birds head upland to nest (for the most part, as some have nested right at the edge of the water. This was a later nest. And it happens quickly.

They don’t flush often and can be found in groups up to 40-50 birds in the wintry mountain ecosystem. At which point, the Owl will lunge out at pluck the bird right off it’s perch. A recent field trip led my group down to Yellow Jacket Canyon which is the only known breeding site for Lucy’s Warbler in Colorado.

Tom Dunkerton tipped me off to an area on the Black Merritt National Wildlife Refuge where some of my target birds can be seen. This year offered no change from the norm as a group of birders were able to find six male Eurasian Wigeons hanging out with a even larger group of Americans. These young Pied Oystercatchers are now three months old and have not quite gone completely black yet and have a distinctive black tip on their bills. I started to learn how to tell waders (and gulls) apart only when I locally ran out of other hard bird groups to tackle. It is in the first bend in the asphalt road north of Baranda, where a dirt track goes right between arable fields towards a hillock (the highest point in a flat landscape). It is also familiar at inland sites in winter, especially reservoirs and refuse tips, and breeds in the relatively-Northerly regions of Europe, Asia, and North America. The adults always show more black and less white in the wing tips and this is especially obvious on the underwing which shows only a tiny amount of white. Yellow legs.

With their strong flight and capability to disperse, parrots have managed to colonize almost every major island group from Tahiti to Mauritius to Dominica. The Red-fan Parrot breaks the mold by having elongated red feathers with purple tips that it can erect to form a spectacular mane around the head.
