Plastic behaviors are not automatically unrelated to natural selection, but the way those behaviors vary across individuals or across groups may not be best explained by underlying genetic differences. Deep in a walking reverie, I was startled out of my daydream by a group of tiny terns perched at the edge of a sand embankment, looking over at me as I looked at them. In Florida, the Least Tern is a state-designated threatened species; the interior populations are federally endangered. Young Least Terns enjoying some shade.

The refuge is a popular birding location and approximately 230 species have been observed by about 1,400 birders who have submitted nearly 8,000 checklists. Pets are not allowed, nor are joggers, runners, or bicyclists. My impression is that it is a fairly safe area and families are a common sight on weekends, as are school groups.

The adults of most species will still care for the chicks no matter how much you touch them. They need to learn by trial and error (often deadly to the chicks) where to safely place the nest, how to keep young in a tight group and hide them to avoid predators. Some weeks later, I heard of a small group of Lined Seedeaters in the same location. In all the years birding this spot, I had never seen this species there before.

On the slow crawl into the farm, the first sighting was a small group of Green Ibis – a new species for me. Endemic to the Guianan shield, this species has captivated me since I first laid eyes on a photograph of it. Most notably of which was a pair of Blood-colored Woodpeckers. I had never before seen a Limpkin do this.

The one bird I did not see here, however, was the Bateleur Eagle … One highlight in the area is the Saddle-billed Stork , likely to be the tallest species in the stork family. The African Spoonbill is one of the six global spoonbill species, and the main African one (there are also some Eurasian Spoonbills in Africa).

eBird seems to be critical of this species’ work ethics, stating that “it flies lazily over open fields or marshes” Maybe the owl is just sleepy, not lazy. It seems they kept a pheasant as a pet for the chick. No wonder species definitions are so problematic. I thought I needed to mention this.
