Ruili is a Chinese city right on the border to Myanmar, and a major border crossing. Apart from insects, these forktails also eat small fish – some photos can be seen in this paper. Slaty-backed Forktails seem to be quite common at Moli Tropical Rainforest Spot, a birding location about half an hour away from Ruili by car.

There was a Gartered Trogon right above me, and one cooperative Brown-throated Three-toed Sloth on a cecropia tree, raising its head to smile at us. A group (maybe 4-5 ex.) At the Pacuare river bank there was a group of rafters getting ready to tackle the noisy waves.

The beach had a fair number of shorebirds, plus dozens of Least Terns scanning the surf for little bait fish and other prey. I was about 90% sure I had seen a group of Gray Kingbirds at the Emerald Coast Visitor’s Center on Okaloosa Island. I couldn’t even believe it – there was a Gray Kingbird right there!

Here is a small group of the Pigeon Guillemots near their rocky Cliffside nesting area. The Pigeon Guillemot is bringing a small fish for breakfast back to the nest. Out on one of the rocks that were visible during low tide, a small group of Harlequin Ducks had gathered. Here is a small group shot of those Purple Martins.

We pulled into the parking lot, got out of the car, and before I’d even had a chance to pull my binoculars out of my backpack, an adult eagle soared right over our heads. Right off the bat I could watch the two cute birds, unobstructed by anything other than some low sand vegetation. After two hours everyone had woken up, and I left the beach to rejoin the group and avoid being too antisocial. Turns out, it took me almost 30 minutes to leave the parking lot! While visiting the Kakadu National Park, I was able to photograph this Rainbow Bee eater right after it had caught a dragonfly. The birds are now breeding in the area, but are quite happy to keep coming to the daily feeding station in groups of over 100 birds. The first bird in that grouping would be the White-crowned Helmut-shrike.

While I enjoyed the view of alligators and Double-crested Cormorants from the nearby fishing pier, I quickly walked away to distance myself from the blasting country music. Tricolored and Little Blue Herons provided diversity, while an Osprey and group of circling Turkey Vultures were the only shapes that broke the constant blue of the sky.

The Gulf is seeing a lot of input from rain swollen rivers right not and I suspect therein lies the answer but whatever the reason may be, take a ferry now and it would be hard not to connect with this species. As the ferry plodded along, small groups of shearwaters lifted off the water to flutter and glide just above the surface.

I found this little grouping of Guillemots, with parents, babies and even an egg. The boat Captain got us right in close. What started as a small group of birds, with the hope they would make it on their own, is now a very strong breeding population. Finally, one flew right into a piece of dead brush right above where I had been watching for a return of the Village Rail, and I finally did get a quick glimpse, and a decent shot. In addition to the Violet Saberwing , just as we were leaveing the lodge, this Scintillant Hummingbird landed right next to the door way.
