In my imagination, the job of a male Australian Brush Turkey is pretty similar – removing or adding bits and pieces to his pile of rotting vegetation in order to get the right temperature to incubate the eggs buried underneath to hatch. The Australasian Figbird is a member of the Oriole family despite not being yellow.

Apparently, this is another bird species that feels not so certain about flying (many humans have similar feelings). The Brown Accento r certainly ranks among the less attractive accentors, though of course, some species in this family set a rather high bar. Rufous-necked Snowfinches can look very photogenic with the right background.

We had last experienced this cheerful family of birds in Katherine in the Northern Territory over 13 years ago, so although the population is isolated there they had the same characteristics. Being a bit older myself now, I have to point out that young human males usually do not look that good, at least to me. Then, I was not sure whether this was the right thing to do. Hongbenghe is a very small village in Yunnan, right next to the border with Myanmar. I saw two Pitta species at Hongbenghe, both among the slightly less glamourous among the pitta family: The Blue-naped Pitta … … and the closely related Rusty-naped Pitta. The White-cheeked Partridge is classified as Near Threatened.
